The Municipal Antiquarium

03 Aprile 2014

Head Office: Procoio - Borgo Sabotino - Latina

The Antiquarium was established in 1997 with artifacts donated by individuals, as a complement to the fund surviving the Antiquarium of the thirties, and is divided into four rooms inside the Procojo Borgo Sabotino, the old nineteenth-century proto-industrial structure for the processing of milk.
The decision to use the Procojo , which does not fall in the urban area of the capital, to host the Municipal Antiquarium , also expressed the desire to connect the various moments in the history of our country , tracing the complex transformation. The building it is located next to the ancient monumental structures such as Genovesi's bridge and the Foce Verde's tower and along with them is the most obvious evidence of land use , respectively, relative to the connections , to defense, to production. Given that the archaeological finds on display in have been found in the surrounding area often casually and in particular during the reclamation works , prehistory, early history , the Archaic Age and the Roman period are the stages of a story that reaches Full Reclamation and so it is desirable that the inevitable gaps along the path are filled not only from new archaeological discoveries , but also by the return of the artifacts found here and musealmente located elsewhere or kept in the storerooms of the Archaeological Superintendence . The Antiquarium is an opportunity to reconstruct events and more general human settlement in the area (geographic transformation and use of resources) and for this reason it will be in close relationship with the museums of the municipalities facing the Pontine plain. Not always know the exact location of places of discovery, the findings were presented to types even with constant references to images of contextualization of the territory, so the educational apparatus have been developed on the basis of a reading of our history, also possible through the processing of materials.
In the first room is exposed cartographic and photographic material concerning the birth of the Borgo. The peopling of the Pontine is documented prehistoric, architectural fragments, sculptures and pottery discovered during construction of the reclamation, as well as original cartography of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. which testifies to the great transformations of the territory.
From artefacts dating from 500,000 to 6,000 years ago you pass the Mousterian lithic industry pontiniano found along the valleys dell'Astura, the Gorgolicino Cicerchia and paleo-shores of Lake Fogliano. Educational apparatus relating to the geological formation of the area accompany the visitor.
In the next two rooms is exposed epigraphic material, sculptural, architectural and clay, a sampling of imported marble and an interesting sampling of ex-voto (terracotta, lead and bronze), brick stamps and exhibits related to weaving. It 'also gathered a group of artefacts related to the ancient routes and stowage of the amphorae (strains of anchors, amphorae type of object found in the wreckage etc.). In several cases are exposed lamps, vases, Etruscan and Roman, Magna Graecia, Campania and documenting the ancient Romans attending places pontine. From the Museum "M.Valeriani" There has been transferred to the numismatic section.
